We have done quite a bit of work for Medline’s products for their e-commerce site. A lot of the videos have been product showcase videos and instructional videos.
Originally when they reached out they were looking for very basic videos, but we did a discovery meeting and realized that creating a higher-end style would be beneficial to their brand. Once they saw the first videos they were blown away.
We had so much fun with them on set in the studio. After a couple production days we got a system down, and it was smooth sailing from there!
The Challenges
Creating instructional videos can bring some obstacles, like having equipment that just doesn’t want to cooperate when that red camera dot is blinking towards it. The goal is to make assembly look as quick and easy as possible, when sometimes it is not that. So there is some extra time that needs to be built into the schedule for bolts and screws that don’t want to fit easily.
The other main challenge is when you need to have a product specialist on set as the actor. A lot of people can get a little camera shy, so that’s something to keep in mind. For this one we didn’t have any speaking roles, so the biggest thing we needed to make sure was that our actor looked like they were having an enjoyable and not frustrating time putting together an item. Keep in mind that it could be a good idea to hire a professional actor and have a product specialist help direct them.
The Production
For most of these shoots, we booked a studio for a couple days. Our goal was to film anywhere from 2-5 products in these days. For each item we’d film an instructional video with actors/employees setting up the product and a product features video with the item rotating.
Medline would have a script with the specific instructions and features that they wanted filmed. We’d usually have one to two members of their marketing team and one or two product specialists on set to make sure that everything was working correctly and to be decision makers if we needed to make any changes on the fly.
The Outcome
The collaboration between us and Medline was a smashing success. They were so easy to work with, communicated well, and were open to ideas. Even with bigger companies like this we are never surprised when they haven’t worked with a high quality video production company or experienced this process. It’s kinda our favorite to watch people go from nervous to loving every aspect of the video production.
