Charlotte Product Video Project: Lazo & Stone
We always love a good product video. Especially when the product speaks for itself. Recently we teamed up with Lazo & Stone, who creates very high end artisan jewel. They make some incredible stuff. You can watch a couple of the product videos from our campaign here and here. We shot both horizontal and vertical versions, you can check out our Instagram page for vertical versions. Okay, so what do you need to know in order to hire a great video company for your product video?
Plan Ahead
It’s super important to collaborate with a video production company to help you plan before you film. And I can give you the tiniest little sneak peak behind the curtain— a few pages of our pre-production plan with Lazo & Stone. We aren’t just a video crew, we’re a creative partner. A good partner should guide you through each of the steps below.
Locations
So for this campaign, we had a good amount of time to plan and a very short amount of time for filming. We had about 2 hours with the models and the specific light we needed, so we had to move around quickly. More on that in the next point. We also had to have a good location that had different spaces with different looks within close proximity so we could move and set up quickly between shots. You need a production company that will knows how to find the right location for you.
Weather & Light
You want a good producer and director of photography that knows the forecast and where the light will be. We knew exactly what time we wanted to shoot and where exactly that light was going to hit. That helped us book the right time for the models and gave us the plan on where to move and when.
Multiple Shoot Days
We had a number of products to film so we planned a separate day to get all of the product hero shots when we weren’t in a rush with talent, and we could do a bare-bones crew for less cost. In our minds, saving money is always a great idea. On some shoots, you may need a crew of 15 people, and all those people get paid a “day rate”. You might consider booking a full crew for the days you film your big crazy stuff and booking a bare-bones crew for the days with simpler shots. A good production company will organize shoots this way to get the best bang for your buck.
So save yourself some pain and hire a good video company that will do these things. You (along with your team) will thank yourself later and maybe even get that raise you’ve been looking for. Like we always say, why be kicking yourself when you can be making money instead— okay, we’ve never said that (I don’t think anyone ever has), but it could be our new slogan.
